Web based fax to email service is a preferred choice because you can send and receive faxes where ever you are as long as you are connected to the internet. It could be from your friend's computer, your handheld, or public cyber cafes.
Fax To Email desktop software on the other hand maybe not be as convenient as compared to web-based because faxing functions can only be used when the software is installed in a computer.
You may have to carry your fax software around and your options will be limited to a PC.

Your comparison of software vs web based Online Faxing needs some fine tuning. Yes, with a web based service one can fax from any internet computer they walk up to, however in order to get the 'walk up' ability the user is accepting other limitations. Let me explain, if the user is a moderate or heavy fax user and depends on sending and receiving faxes many times a day, then 'web based' is not efficient. Consider that each time the user would need to go to a website, enter user name and password, before they can even send a fax. Next, the user must browse their computer folders to find the file to send by fax. Right here is another limitation, there must be a file in order to fax it. What if the user wants to fax an invoice or report or webpage? Also, web based fax services are limited on what type or format these documents can be, usually they allow faxing, Word (.doc), Excel (.xls), Publisher (.pub), Acrobat (.pdf), Image files (.jpg or .tif) and that's it! You've got to be kidding the user to say this is a good choice! The next limitation is the user must look up the fax to number from some other list or maintain a separate fax list on the website...another contact list to maintain and to change when you get that call that their fax number just changed. This is grossly inefficient.
In summary, web based faxing, gives you
1) 'walk up' ability, but
2) only a select few documents can be faxed.
3) Plus you must have this document with you on CD or flash drive to actually use a 'walk up' computer.
4) You can't fax printed output, such as purchase orders, invoice, reports, etc.
5) You have to maintain another contact list or remember their fax number.
I would recommend you consider the software based online fax option for maximum flexibility and efficiency for busy offices that depend on faxing daily. Software based gives you the ability to fax anything, documents, reports, invoices, etc. that can be printed from your computer. Plus, there's no log on user name, or password, just a couple of mouse clicks and done! Plus, you have the option of linking Online Fax to your current address lists kept in Outlook, Act, Excel, account system, etc., no separate fax contact list to keep up with. Users considering an online fax solution need to know these details to make an informed decision matching the service to their needs. Not all online fax services are equal.
